چکیده

In this paper, we develop a simulation optimization algorithm for determining the traffic light signal timings for an intersection of two one-way street traffic flows modeled as single-server queues. The system performance is estimated via stochastic discreteevent simulation, and gradient-based search based on stochastic approximation is applied. In particular, we use smoothed perturbation analysis to derive both left-hand and right-hand gradient estimators of the queue lengths with respect to the green/red light lengths within a signal cycle. Numerical experiments compare the performance of the gradient estimators with finite-difference estimators and illustrate the optimization algorithm.

Simulation Optimization of Urban Arterial Signals via Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA)

In this paper, we develop a simulation optimization procedure for optimizing the urban arterial traffic signal timings including a bunch of sequential intersections. The system performance is estimated via a stochastic discrete-event meso-scopic traffic simulator, and a gradient-based search algorithm on stochastic approximation is applied to give the optimal signal timings. Simultaneous pertur...

Optimization Using Simulation of Traffic Light Signal Timings

Traffic congestion has become a great challenge and a large burden on both the governments and the citizens in vastly populated cities. The main problem, originally initiated by several factors, continues to threaten the stability of modern cities and the livelihood of its habitants. Hence, improving the control strategies that govern the traffic operations is a powerful solution that can solve...

Optimizing Traffic Control to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Vehicular Emissions Integrated Approach with VISSIM, CMEM, and VISGAOST

continuous progression along streets do not guarantee the lowest fuel consumption and emissions. Excessive speeding, which may occur on roads with low traffic, may cause increased emissions for several pollutants. The best flow of traffic on arterial streets, in terms of fuel consumption and emissions, is the one with the fewest stops, shortest delays, and moderate speeds maintained throughout ...

Revisiting the Application of Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation towards Signal Timing Optimization

Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) has gained favor as an efficient optimization method for calibrating computationally intensive, “black box” traffic flow simulations. Few recent studies have investigated the efficiency of SPSA for traffic signal timing optimization. It is important for this to be investigated, because significant room for improvement exists in the area ...
